Why Your Copier Keeps Jamming
Chronic jamming is a wear problem or a paper problem, and the two are easy to tell apart once you know where the sheet stops.
Read the jam location
If sheets stop at the tray, the pickup and separation rollers are glazed. If they stop mid-path, look at transport rollers or a torn sheet fragment left behind. If they crumple at the exit, the fuser rollers are worn or a piece of debris is stuck to them.
Paper is often the culprit
Paper stored in a cold garage or near a humidifier absorbs moisture and curls. Keep reams sealed, in the conditioned office, and fan the stack before loading. Cheap 20 lb stock with heavy dust content wears rollers fast.
When rollers need replacing
Rubber feed rollers are consumables with a rated page life. Cleaning with isopropyl alcohol buys weeks, not months. If jams return within days of a cleaning, replace the roller kit.
When to bring in a technician
